Shitty Product Review: Sainsbury's Spiced Apple Air Freshener2020-12-21 | 12:35
A lovely smelling air freshener, redolent of the Yule season, in a handy aerosol can. When used in the bathroom smells like mulled turd.
Verdict: 6/10
That Was The Week That Was2020-12-20 | 21:20
I would say "what a week!" but that would definitely be an exaggeration. Not much to write home about, but I'll give it a whirl.
- My Raspberry Pi (3 B) arrived. A case was included but could not contain the Pi because of a heatsink. I managed to cut a hole in the case
using my penknife. Number of times the penknife slipped and nearly closed the blade onto my finger(s): 3
- Set up the Pi and installed MariaDB; set up dBeaver on my laptop to manage this db.
- Had Friday as a day off; went into town and popped into Clas Ohlson. Picked up some oak shelves from the reduced/damaged bin. The shelves
were in good general condition with a couple of dings. No problem since I had a specific use for them in mind.
- Used the Clas oak to replace a couple of shelves on the gym storage rack. Each shelf is rated for 150kg but that seems to be the maximum
that can be supported by the shelf; the current shelves are 5mm MDF and are sagging under around 90kg of kettlebells. I have no doubt that if the
weight was spread across the 'runners' holding up the MDF everything would have been fine. The new oak shelves are much better and now I don't
have to worry about being woken at 02:46 by everything crashing down.
- Grazed my knuckle with a tenon saw while cutting the new oak shelves to fit.
- Took the salt beef out of its brine and boiled it. Tried a slice and it's pretty good. Pretty pretty pretty good.
- Took the pastrami out of its brine, coated with ground black peppercorns and ground coriander seed, smoked to internal temperature of 70C
before steaming for 3 hours. Tried a slice and, like the salt beef, it's pretty good. Very peppery.
- Put up the Yule tree and other Yule decorations. The front room is pretty cosy now with two sets of fairy lights.
- Ordered some new dumbbells AND it seems they will be here before the 25th.
The Week in Review2020-12-13 | 21:50
Stealing an idea from some IRC boodles I might start publishing a summary of my week. I often feel like I don't actually do anything; this will
either prove me right, or wrong.:
This week, in no particular order of excitement, litness or significance:
- Went for a few short walks while my ankle *still* recovers from being rolled two weeks ago!
- Lifted some weight.
- Woke up in the night with chest pains. This was because I'd lifted weight and then slept in an awkward position. Also: some trapped wind.
- Stuck a small brisket (800g) in some brine for salt beef.
- Stuck another small brisket (800g) in some brine for pastrami.
- Bought a new mechanical keyboard.
- Bought a Raspberry Pi 3 off the electronic Bay. Hopefully this arrives in time for Yule. I have some vague furtling plans for this.
- Watched some Christmas movies:
- The Long Kiss Goodnight | [IMDb]
- Die Hard 2: Die Harder | [IMDb]
- The Bourne Identity | [IMDb]
- Defrosted the fridge freezer. The freezer looked like Hoth.
